Dong Fang Mei Ren Oolong (東方美人 / Oriental Beauty)
When most people hear “Oriental Beauty,” they think of Taiwan.
But nowadays, farmers in Guizhou, Yunnan, Fujian, and Guangdong are reviving the original Chinese craft—creating versions that are just as elegant, with more richness and layers than their Taiwanese cousins.
The key to its magic is the green leafhopper (小绿叶蝉). These tiny insects nibble on the young tea leaves, triggering a natural chemical reaction inside the plant. That gentle stress transforms the leaf’s chemistry, producing the tea’s signature honeyed, fruity fragrance. Without the leafhoppers, there would be no Oriental Beauty.
These teas grow high in the mountains—800 to 1500 meters up, surrounded by forests and mist. Since the insects are essential to this tea, no pesticides are used. Cool nights and humid days let the leaves oxidize slowly, building the sweet aftertaste, silky mouthfeel, and deep aroma this style is known for. Because everything depends on nature—the weather, the insects, the timing—each harvest tells its own story.
This year’s Dong Fang Mei Ren opens with a floral, roasted caramelized peach aroma. The flavor unfolds into rose and gardenia-like florals, balanced by a caramelized, nutty maltiness that adds warmth and depth. The finish leaves a lingering sweet floral honeyed aroma in your nose and mouth.
Each pouch is conveniently portioned for a single session (about 4.5g).
To brew: use one pouch in a 90–100ml gaiwan or teapot, with 195°F (91°C) water. Give it a quick rinse, then steep 10–15 seconds for the first infusion, and 5 seconds each for the following infusions.
If you already love Oriental Beauty and want to experience a different, elevated expression of it—this Chinese Dong Fang Mei Ren is a beautiful rendition of a beloved classic.
