Born from one of Jingdezhen’s most celebrated porcelain traditions, Langhong traces its heritage to the imperial copper-red glazes of the Ming dynasty and was famously revived during the Kangxi era of the Qing dynasty. Colored with copper and fired above 1300°C in a carefully controlled reduction atmosphere, its brilliant crimson is notoriously difficult to achieve.
During firing, the glaze naturally flows and transforms, creating luminous layers of ruby, scarlet and deep crimson. Slight variations in temperature and kiln atmosphere make every successful firing subtly different—giving each Langhong gaiwan its own distinctive expression of copper, porcelain and fire.
This unpredictability made traditional Langhong exceptionally difficult to produce. An old saying captures the challenge: “若要穷，烧郎红” — “If you want to become poor, fire Langhong,” referring to the high failure rateinvolved in achieving a successful copper-red firing.
Because the color is born inside the kiln rather than simply applied as surface decoration, each successful Langhong piece develops its own depth, gradients, and subtle variations. That combination of fire, copper, porcelain and precise kiln control is what has made Langhong one of Jingdezhen’s historically prized glaze traditions.
