Moonlit Azure — Jingdezhen Handmade Gaiwan 120ml

Moonlit Azure is a handmade Jingdezhen gaiwan finished with a traditional color glaze (颜色釉), one of the celebrated decorative traditions of Jingdezhen porcelain. Its shifting shades of deep blue, misty azure, and subtle tonal variation are created naturally through yaobian (窑变), or kiln transformation, as the glaze responds to the intense heat inside the kiln.

Despite its organic, unpredictable surface, this piece is not wood-fired.

Wood firing refers to the method used to heat a kiln rather than a particular type of porcelain. Historically, wood was simply the primary fuel available for ceramic kilns. Early ceramics were often fired exposed to the flame, allowing wood ash to settle naturally on the surface and form irregular ash glazes.

As Chinese porcelain developed—particularly from the Tang and Song dynasties onward—potters increasingly protected porcelain inside saggars (匣钵) during firing. This prevented ash from landing on the surface and allowed the exceptionally clean, refined glaze work for which Chinese porcelain became famous.

The aesthetic commonly marketed today as “wood-fired” usually celebrates the opposite approach: exposed firing, natural ash deposits, flame marks, and deliberately rustic surfaces. Moonlit Azure follows a different tradition.

Here, the beauty comes from glaze chemistry, kiln atmosphere, and high-temperature firing. The glaze changes within the kiln in ways that can never be completely controlled, producing subtle variations from one gaiwan to another. No two pieces will have exactly the same pattern or distribution of color.

For the Jingdezhen artisan who created this piece, the defining quality of true porcelain is not whether the kiln is heated by wood, gas, electricity, or a combination of fuels—it is whether the clay reaches the proper high temperature necessary to become fully vitrified porcelain.

Moonlit Azure celebrates that philosophy: refined Jingdezhen porcelain, transformed by heat, with a glaze that captures something resembling moonlight moving across a deep blue night sky.

Each gaiwan is handmade and individually kiln-transformed, so variations in color, pattern, and glaze movement are natural and part of its character.
