Arita-yaki Sometsuke: Japanese Porcelain in a Chinese Tea Form
Arita-yaki is one of Japan’s most celebrated porcelain traditions, originating in Arita, Saga Prefecture over 400 years ago. Among its most recognizable styles is Sometsuke (染付), where cobalt blue decoration is painted beneath a clear glaze.
Sometsuke has a close historical relationship with Chinese Qinghua (青花) blue-and-white porcelain. Over generations, Arita potters developed their own interpretation, combining rich indigo color with Japanese floral motifs, geometric patterns, and generous areas of white porcelain.
This gaiwan brings those traditions together in a particularly interesting way. The gaiwan is originally a Chinese tea-brewing form, while the porcelain and decoration reflect the long ceramic tradition of Arita, creating a natural meeting point between Chinese tea culture and Japanese craftsmanship.
The surface is filled with flowing flowers, curling forms, crosshatched patterns, and deep cobalt outlines. Different shades of blue create depth, while the white porcelain keeps the detailed decoration from feeling too heavy. The pattern continues across the lid and body, so the design changes as the gaiwan is turned in the hand.
Its 100 ml capacity makes it especially well suited for gongfu-style brewing, giving enough room for the leaves to open while keeping each infusion small and concentrated.
