Zhengyang Mountain Mengding Huangya – Quntizhong Yellow

正阳山蒙顶黄芽

This exceptionally limited Mengding Huangya comes from Zhengyang Mountain (正阳山), a secluded high-mountain growing area near Mengding Mountain in Ya’an, Sichuan. The old tea garden sits at approximately 1,350 meters above sea level, surrounded by the cool mist, abundant rainfall, and diffused mountain light for which the greater Mengding tea region is known.

At this elevation, spring arrives slowly. The cooler temperatures delay the growth of the tea plants, allowing the young leaves to develop gradually before they are picked early in the season. Only around 20 kilograms of this tea are produced each year.

The tea is made from Quntizhong (群体种), the region’s traditional heirloom population cultivar. Unlike a modern clonal cultivar, Quntizhong tea gardens consist of genetically diverse, seed-grown plants. Each tea tree develops slightly differently, creating greater natural variation and a more layered expression of the mountain environment.

Every stage of production is completed entirely by hand, from the selective early-spring picking to the repeated pan-firing, shaping, and controlled yellowing of the leaves.

What Makes Yellow Tea Different

Mengding Huangya is one of China’s most celebrated yellow teas. Its defining step is menhuang (闷黄), often translated as “smothering yellow.” After the leaves are heated in a wok much like green tea, they are gently wrapped or covered while still warm. The trapped heat and moisture allow the leaves to transform slowly, softening the sharper vegetal character normally associated with green tea.

This delicate process requires careful judgment. Too little yellowing and the tea remains sharp and grassy; too much can suppress its freshness. When handled properly, the process creates a tea that preserves the clarity of early-spring green tea while developing the softness and rounded sweetness associated with yellow tea.

Flavor Profile

This high-mountain Huangya is exceptionally soft and delicate. The cup opens with a clean, gentle honey sweetness followed by fresh, light grassy notes. Rather than the roasted nuttiness or heavier vegetal character found in many traditional Mengding Huangya teas, this lot feels airy, smooth, and remarkably pure.

Its character sits somewhere between a very light green tea and a young white tea: fresh but never sharply grassy, sweet without becoming heavy, and soft enough to drink throughout the day. The liquor has a silky, almost weightless texture, with a quiet honeyed finish that continues to build over successive infusions.

Because it comes from an early-season picking of old Quntizhong tea plants at 1,350 meters, the tea expresses freshness through restraint rather than intensity. It is subtle, elegant, and best appreciated slowly.

Brewing Instructions

Gaiwan: 90–100 ml
Tea: 3 grams
Water: 185–195°F / 85–90°C
First infusion: 20–25 seconds
Following infusions: 10–15 seconds, gradually increasing as needed

A quick rinse is optional. Using slightly cooler water will emphasize the tea’s soft honey sweetness and white-tea-like delicacy. Hotter water will bring forward more of its fresh grassy structure.
