What is Tamaryokucha?

Tamaryokucha (玉緑茶) is a type of Japanese green tea that is distinctive for its curled or coiled shape. The name "Tamaryokucha" literally translates to "ball-shaped green tea," reflecting its unique appearance. This tea is produced primarily in the Kyushu region, especially in Nagasaki and Kumamoto prefectures.

Why is it called "Guricha"?

"Guricha (ぐり茶)" is another name for Tamaryokucha and comes from the Japanese word "guri-guri," which means "curly" or "twisted." This name refers to the tea leaves' distinctive curled or twisted shape, which is the result of a unique processing method.

This Oku Yutaka robust and full-bodied, with a strong umami presence that is both warm and vibrant. The tea also has a subtle sweetness, often compared to the flavor of milk or coconut milk, along with vegetal notes that might remind you of fresh green vegetables.

Brewing Instructions:

Brew at 175°F or 80°C for approximately 90 seconds using 5g of tea for the initial infusions. Maintain the same temperature for second infusions but steep for around 45 seconds.
