Arita-yaki Sometsuke: 400 Years of Japanese Porcelain
Arita-yaki is one of Japan’s most celebrated porcelain traditions, originating in Arita, Saga Prefecture over 400 years ago. Known for its fine porcelain body, elegant forms, and detailed decoration, Arita ware has played an important role in the history of Japanese ceramics.
This cup features Sometsuke (染付), the Japanese tradition of decorating porcelain with cobalt blue beneath a transparent glaze. The technique has a close historical relationship with Chinese Qinghua (青花) porcelain, especially the famous blue-and-white wares of Jingdezhen. As porcelain production developed in Arita, Japanese potters gradually created their own interpretation of the style, using local forms, floral motifs, and a softer sense of movement in the painting.
The design on this cup highlights that character beautifully. Its rounded shape gives the floral decoration room to flow naturally around the surface rather than feeling confined to a single panel. Deep indigo lines are balanced by softer blue washes, while the untouched white porcelain becomes part of the composition itself.
The result feels almost like a traditional ink painting wrapped around the cup. Small variations in the brushwork and shading give the decoration warmth and character, while the clean porcelain body keeps the overall look refined.
