Ya’an Tibetan Tea (雅安藏茶) is a traditional Sichuan dark tea with more than a thousand years of history, and was traditionally produced in Ya’an before being transported westward toward Tibetan regions along the Sichuan–Tibet Tea Horse Road.

Despite the name, “Tibetan tea” does not mean the tea was grown in Tibet. The name comes from its historical trade route, cultural role, and long connection with Tibetan tea drinking.

Unlike teas made primarily from tender spring buds, traditional Ya’an Tibetan tea uses more mature tea leaves, giving it a deeper, more grounded character.

What Makes This Tea Different?

The tea is grown using biodynamic agriculture (生物动力农业)—an approach that treats the farm as a living, self-contained ecosystem.

Rather than simply focusing on what can be applied to the plants, biodynamic farming looks at the entire environment: soil, biodiversity, plants, animals, natural nutrient cycles, and the surrounding ecosystem.

Biodynamic agriculture goes beyond simply being organic. The goal is to allow the surrounding natural environment and ecosystem to nurture the soil and plants with as little outside intervention as possible.

And you can taste that sense of place and deep nutrients in the cup.

What Does It Taste Like?

The first impression is clean, silky, and quietly deep.

You’ll find notes of cypress wood and bamboo shoot-like earthiness, dark cacao-like nuttiness, and a subtle minerality, with a smooth, slightly oily texture and medium body that's not too light nor too heavy.

The earthiness is present, but never overwhelming or excessively fermented. Instead, it reminds us more of fresh-cut wood and deep forest air.

As you sip, the tea settles toward the back of the tongue, where a subtle butter-like sweetness and silky texture slowly spreads across the palate.

It is steady, comforting, and very clean for a deeply fermented dark tea.

And with each infusion, the roasted sweetness and nutty character gradually evolve.
