Jingdezhen "Brush & Ink" Qinghua Gaiwans (Approx. 80 ml)
Dimensions: 3.5" wide x 3" tall

By the same artist behind the Jingdezhen Cerulean Tales Qinghua Gaiwan, the Brush & Ink Gaiwan shifts the mood toward something quieter and more calligraphic—like an illustration lifted from a hand-painted scroll.

Hand-crafted and hand-painted in Jingdezhen, this collection continues her exploration of traditional qinghua cobalt underglaze, but with a softer visual atmosphere. Instead of a blue-toned body, these gaiwans are finished in a soft satin off-white glaze that feels smooth and velvety in the hand. The surface has a muted, cloudlike glow—neither glossy nor flat—creating a calm backdrop for the brushwork above.

The imagery itself is rendered entirely in qinghua cobalt blue, allowing line, spacing, and movement to carry the design rather than color contrast. The effect feels more like ink on silk than a dreamlike picture book—elegant, composed, and fluid.

The first piece, “Celestial Mist,” features swirling clouds drifting across the surface in rhythmic motion. The composition feels lifted directly from a classical scroll painting—light yet continuous with movement that makes the gaiwan feel alive.

The second, “Iris Spring,” presents graceful irises rising with quiet confidence. The petals and leaves are articulated through controlled cobalt lines, giving the piece a refined quality. The restrained palette allows the form of the flowers to feel intentional and balanced, echoing the clarity and elegance found in traditional ink painting.

Both gaiwans share the same scroll-like sensibility. The off-white glaze softens the presence of the clay, while the cobalt designs maintain depth and structure. In the hand, the piece feels calm and grounded—inviting focused, attentive brewing.

As with all of the artist’s work, each gaiwan is entirely hand-painted. Subtle shifts in brush rhythm, cloud movement, or floral placement ensure that no two are ever identical. Even within the same theme, each piece carries its own personality.
