Karigane Green Tea is made from the stems carefully separated during the production of sencha or gyokuro. Depending on the region, you might also hear it called kuki-cha, bōcha, shiraore, or shiragane.

Because it’s made from the stem parts, Karigane is naturally rich in L-theanine and amino acids, giving it a mellow, sweet-savory flavor with little to no bitterness. These parts are also lower in tannins, which makes the tea smooth and easy to drink.

This particular Karigane comes from Kagoshima and is made using the same tea plants we use for our Royal Matcha. While the matcha has its own creamy and refined personality, the stems tell a completely different story—one that’s savory, refreshing, and just as memorable.

The tea opens with a savory and refreshing aroma of roasted vegetables and yuzu citrus. You’ll notice a unique and fresh peppery green note which is followed by a light sweetness that reminds us of sweet grass. It finishes clean and crisp with a medium body. The tea is a clear, light green, and since it’s organically grown, you can really feel the clarity and purity in every sip.

Brewing Tips

We recommend using a small 150–180ml kyusu or shiboridashi with 5 grams of tea. While this tea can handle boiling water without turning bitter, you’ll get the most out of its layered flavors by brewing at 190°F (about 79°C) for 30 seconds.

If you’re looking for a green tea with lower caffeine, something a little different to mix into your green tea routine, or you’re already a fan of our Royal Matcha, this Kagoshima Organic Karigane Green Tea is worth trying. It offers a fresh perspective on the same tea plant—smooth, savory, and easy to drink—making it a great addition to your collection.
