A 175 ml Yixing Pinggai Hanwa (平盖汉瓦壶) teapot made from traditional Zini (紫泥) purple clay. The upright, rounded body and neatly fitted flat lid give this teapot a clean, grounded look. Its warm brown clay and simple lines let the craftsmanship speak for itself, while the built-in multi-hole filter makes it a practical choice for gongfu brewing.
Pinggai Hanwa Shape & Zini Clay
Pinggai Hanwa (平盖汉瓦) is a flat-lidded variation of the traditional Hanwa (汉瓦) Yixing teapot shape. Hanwa designs take inspiration from the shapes and lines of historic Chinese roof tiles. The broad opening is useful when adding loose leaves and cleaning the pot after brewing.
Zini (紫泥) is a classic Yixing purple clay from Jiangsu, China. The muted brown tone is natural to this piece. Another detail is the poem engraved inside the teapot, a quiet surprise when you lift the lid. The pot also has a built-in multi-hole filter at the spout.
What Tea Works Well?
I'd start with ripe (shu) puerh or roasted oolongs, especially Wuyi rock tea. Liu Bao and fuller-bodied Chinese black teas are also worth trying in Zini clay. These are suggested pairings rather than strict rules; the tea, water and brewing technique all make a difference.
The 175 ml size works well for repeated gongfu infusions. Because unglazed Yixing clay can gradually retain tea aromas, many tea drinkers dedicate one pot to a favorite tea family.

A Note from LeoI traveled directly to Yixing because I wanted to meet the people making these teapots and see the pieces for myself. It's hard to judge a teapot just from a photo. I want to feel the clay, handle the pot and decide whether it's something I would enjoy using before bringing it back to Tea & Whisk. What caught my attention about this Hanwa was its simple, balanced shape. Then there's the poem hidden inside. I like those little details that you don't notice until you actually spend time with the teapot. October 2026 |
Care & Natural Variation
Rinse the teapot with hot water before its first use. After brewing, remove the leaves, rinse with warm water without scented soap, and allow the pot and lid to dry completely before storing. Small variations in the clay surface and hand-finished details are natural to this kind of teaware. The listing includes one teapot and lid only.
