Introducing a truly unique oolong from one of Japan’s most innovative tea farms, where tradition meets modernity in the heart of Yame. While Yame is renowned for its high-quality Gyokuro, this 100% organic tea farm stands out by defying the norm. Rather than following the conventional path of popular Japanese teas, this farm has taken inspiration from Taiwan and China, crafting an exceptional oolong tea using the single cultivar Koshun.
This farm, also known for producing our highly sought-after Cherry Blossom Black Tea, is pioneering the future of Japanese tea by embracing techniques learned from some of the world’s finest tea regions. Even though this tea is machine-picked, the quality is superb—capturing the delicate, floral essence of the Koshun cultivar, along with the depth and complexity often associated with Taiwanese oolongs.
This Koshun oolong is smooth and features a light, lingering aftertaste. You’ll notice sweet grass and vegetable notes, mingled with a soft, buttery sweetness. Its flavor is unlike any other Japanese oolong, standing out with its light oxidation, much like Taiwanese low-oxidation oolongs. This lighter processing lets you truly appreciate the natural character of the Koshun cultivar, allowing its delicate flavors to shine through and making it a fun, educational experience for exploring the complexities of this rare Japanese tea.
In a world where demand for oolong in Japan is still low, this farm bravely crafts only 15kg a year, making this tea as rare as it is exquisite. The farmer’s passion for innovation was evident when they showcased their oolong to Leo, our expert tea taster, using Chinese-style teaware—a nod to the global tea culture they draw from.
Brewing Instructions:
Brew this oolong with care using a gaiwan or a small teapot (100-120ml). Almost boiling water (205°F / 95°C) is ideal for bringing out the full flavor of this tea. Use 4-5g of tea and steep for about 30 seconds. No need to rinse—Japanese oolongs are clean and ready to be enjoyed from the first infusion.
Supporting this farm not only expands your tea experience but also helps encourage the growth of organic, innovative tea farming in Japan. Taste the difference in every sip as you experience one of the finest oolongs crafted outside of Taiwan or China, right here in Yame.
