Until now, we hadn't discovered a houjicha that truly resonated with our values and met our high standards. But with this selection, we've found a tea that we're proud to present to our customers. This exceptional houjicha primarily uses stems harvested during the first pickings of spring, giving it the distinct names of kukihoujicha or houjikukicha. Some regions even refer to it as karigane houjicha.
The stems are known for their lower caffeine content, and when combined with the roasting process which further reduces caffeine levels, this tea becomes an excellent choice for all-day, even night-time consumption. The stems also add a more natural sweetness to the tea that is tightly balanced with a gentle smokiness.
The result of this careful production is a special cup of tea full of flavor - medium toasty notes, a slightly sweet finish, and an inviting aroma that will linger in the air after your cup is empty. Leo personally visited the production site and witnessed the meticulousness of the entire process. The utmost care was taken to ensure nothing but a flawless product.
These slender stems, picked from the youngest buds, identifiable by their size and thickness, were harvested in spring. Although their thinness poses a challenge in roasting due to the risk of burning, they also carry a promise of sweetness when roasted skillfully, setting this houjicha apart.
Each sip leaves you with a delightful, lingering sweetness, void of any grassy undertones. Truly, this houjicha stands as a testament to the harmonious balance of skillful roasting and high-quality, spring-harvested stems.

A really great, mostly stem hojicha. Has some really nice dark, nutty, almost coffee-like notes. A favorite afternoon tea
