Old Bush Winter Duckshit Oolong (冬季鸭屎香) stands out with its unusual name and distinctive flavor. Grown in Fenghuang Mountain in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, this Phoenix Dancong tea is known for its aromatic and smooth character, traits that have earned teas from this region their reputation.
The name “Duckshit” (鸭屎香) comes with intriguing stories. Some say it refers to the yellow loam soil where the tea is grown, colloquially called “duck shit soil.” Others claim that tea farmers named it to discourage others from taking their prized tea.
Teas from old bushes, like this one, offer a depth of flavor that younger plants can’t match. The aged root systems absorb a wide range of nutrients from the mineral-rich soil of Fenghuang Mountain, giving the tea a creamy floral aroma reminiscent of orchid and rose, with a hint of sweet creamed corn. The flavor mirrors its aroma, offering a smooth floral sweetness with a subtle vegetal note underneath. The lighter body makes it a refreshing tea to drink, while the floral aftertaste lingers gently on the palate.
Winter harvests like this one are known for their mellower and creamier profiles compared to the more vibrant and complex spring picks. The lighter body, combined with the rich aroma and delicate sweetness, makes this tea refreshing without being overpowering. It’s a perfect choice to gently wake up to in the morning or for a quiet moment alone.
Fenghuang Mountain’s high altitude and nutrient-dense soil provide the ideal conditions for producing teas of this caliber. Combined with traditional processing methods passed down through generations, this duckshit oolong embodies the essence of Phoenix Dancong teas and their reputation for exceptional fragrances and flavors.
