When it comes to Japanese green tea, we normally only think of sencha or matcha. Kamairicha is actually has been around since the Edo period (1603-1868). The method was especially popular in regions like Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Miyazaki, where the local climate and conditions were well-suited to producing this type of tea.
The more widespread practice of steaming tea leaves (which became the standard for most Japanese green teas) was popularized during the 18th century. As steaming became more common, Kamairicha production decreased, making it a less common type of Japanese green tea over time.
Kamairicha is increasingly rare, especially one that carries the Japanese organic certification, making this tea a treasure for connoisseurs. Its pan-fired process differentiates it from the more common steamed Japanese green teas, offering a depth of flavor reminiscent of Chinese green tea but with the sweet, umami notes typical of Japanese tea. We consider this a milder Kamairicha, perfect for those who appreciate a nuanced, well-rounded cup.
This Kamairicha greets you with a pronounced bitterness upfront, gradually mellowing into a soft, mild sweetness with a smooth texture. The umami notes subtly emerge on the back end, leaving you with a clean, refreshing finish.
Asanoka has become our most popular cultivar for everyday green tea, known for its consistent quality and approachable flavor profile. This tea is an ideal choice for those seeking a daily ritual that offers depth without overwhelming the palate.
