This one-of-a-kind, wood-fired matcha whisk holder was made in Jingdezhen, China, after I asked a local potter to create a shape I had been searching for. The rounded form is designed for a bamboo chasen (matcha whisk), with a curved shoulder and a small center opening. Choose from distinct one-of-a-kind wood-fired finishes: Copper Frost has copper-brown and soft ivory tones, while Ash Halo has a dramatic gray-white ash-like glaze over warm copper. Each holder has its own firing marks.
Every wood-fired piece is one of a kind. The natural effects of the firing leave individual patterns and color changes, so each variation has its own product photos. More distinct designs may be added as separate options over time.
Why This Shape Works
A bamboo chasen has delicate, curved tines. After rinsing the whisk, placing it over the holder lets the tines spread around the rounded outer surface rather than getting flattened. This helps the whisk keep its shape while it air-dries. The compact, rounded ceramic body gives it a stable place to rest.
The design is also useful during matcha preparation. Turn the holder over to rest the whisk when you need to set it aside, as illustrated in the photos. It can also serve as a simple rest for a bamboo chashaku (matcha scoop).
Choose Your Holder
Copper Frost: Warm copper and earthy rose-brown glaze with flowing cream-white areas, speckled kiln marks, and a rounded center opening. Each side looks different.
Ash Halo: An ash-white and smoky charcoal mottled glaze forms a halo around the center opening. A soft ivory band meets the copper-brown body, with irregular kiln-firing marks that make this holder one of a kind. The photos show this variation from three different angles.

Leo's Story: A Special Request in Jingdezhen I had been looking for a chasen holder in this shape, but it was surprisingly difficult to find one. During my 2025 trip to Jingdezhen, I asked the same potter I was working with if she could make something like it. She did. What makes this one special to me is that it is wood-fired. Most whisk holders I came across were much more ordinary. I wanted something that worked well with a chasen but also had the character of a small piece of pottery. I love how the firing brought out different earthy colors on each side. Leo Lukidi |
Care
Wipe or gently hand-wash with warm water, then dry completely. Avoid dishwashers, harsh scrubbing, and sudden temperature changes. Let the chasen air-dry thoroughly before storing it.
