Sold individually: This listing includes ONE (1) teacup. The photos showing several cups are examples of the hand-painted design. Each cup is selected at random, so the placement and shape of the brushstrokes will vary slightly.
Small, simple, and quietly beautiful. This 35 ml gongfu teacup comes from Jingdezhen, China, with a soft, slightly matte cream-colored surface, a warm yellow interior, and loose, dark bamboo-inspired brushwork painted by hand.
The gentle curves fit comfortably in the hand, while its small capacity is suited to tasting tea in short, focused sips. The appeal is in the understated finish and the individual character of the painting. Even cups made in the same style do not look exactly alike.
How It's Made
The potter shapes each cup by hand on a wheel using clay, then decorates it with a natural mineral-based clay slip and hand-paints the blue bamboo-inspired design. A transparent plant-ash glaze is applied before firing.
The teacup is fired in an electric kiln at 1,280°C (2,336°F) in an oxygen-rich (oxidation) atmosphere. This helps bring out the warm yellow ash glaze and its simple, rustic character.

Leo's Story: The Cups I Kept Looking At I met the woman who makes these teacups at a pottery festival during my trip to Jingdezhen. Out of all the pieces I saw, her soft, almost matte colors really caught my eye. The design is so simple, but I kept going back to look at it. The longer I looked, the more beautiful it seemed. I love how a few brushstrokes and a quiet color can make a piece so memorable. Leo Lukidi |
