This Jianshui Dragon Egg teapot is crafted from Jianshui clay (江水泥), a high-quality, iron-rich clay that enhances the flavor of tea by softening astringency, rounding out flavors, and bringing depth and smoothness to oolongs, puerh, and aged black teas.
Its slight porosity allows the teapot to breathe, supporting the development of tea aroma and flavor during brewing. The high iron content in the clay also provides excellent heat retention, ensuring a stable temperature that is ideal for precision brewing. Stable heat promotes even extraction of tea flavors, which is especially beneficial for rolled and compressed teas, like Tieguanyin, Da Hong Pao, and Shou puerh.
With repeated use, the teapot gradually absorbs trace tea oils, seasoning itself to produce richer, more balanced brews over time.
Although it is not as famous as Yixing clay, Jianshui clay teapots are often compared to Yixing clay in terms of brewing performance and is regarded as a sort of hidden gem. Jianshui teapots also have their own distinct soft tactile feel and warm color that many tea connoisseurs prize.
