This is one of the more special Honey Orchid oolongs we carry. It comes from old tea trees in Fengxi Wudong, on Phoenix Mountain in Guangdong.
What stood out to me first was the aroma. Even after just a quick rinse, the gaiwan smells intensely sweet, with orchid, honey, and something that reminds me of tapioca pearls.
The tea itself has a thick, smooth texture with a clear honey sweetness. There is also a soft nutty flavor that reminds me again of tapioca, followed by a light mineral sensation along the sides of the mouth. It gives the tea some brightness without making it sharp or bitter.
The floral character becomes more noticeable as you continue brewing. I get something close to magnolia, and the aroma stays in the mouth for a long time after drinking.
What I like about this tea is that the name Honey Orchid actually makes sense when you drink it. You don't have to search for those flavors. The honey sweetness and floral aroma are both very easy to notice.
How to Brew — Gongfu Style
Tea: 4g
Water: 90–100ml
Temperature: 205°F / 96°C
Give the leaves a quick rinse first.
First infusion: 20–22 seconds
Next 4–5 infusions: 5–7 seconds
After the 6th infusion: Add about 3–5 seconds each time
You can usually get at least 10–12 good infusions from this tea.
If you accidentally steep it too long, it can become a little drier, but it doesn't turn aggressively bitter, so it is fairly forgiving for a Phoenix oolong.
Alternate name: Mi Lan Xiang (老丛蜜兰香)
How to Brew (Gongfu Style)
• Tea-to-water ratio: 4 grams of tea for a 90–100ml gaiwan or small teapot
• Water temperature: 205°F (96°C)
• First Rinse: Quickly rinse the leaves with hot water to awaken the aroma
• First infusion: infuse for 20-22 seconds before pouring
• Next 4–5 infusions: Just steep for 5–7 seconds each
• From the 6th on: Add 3-5 seconds per additional infusion to get more brews
Expect at least 10-12 brews for this long lasting, premium tea. When accidentally over-brewed,m the tea becomes slightly more dry but does not get bitter, making it a rather forgiving tea.
