When people think of heicha (dark tea), they often imagine something dark, earthy, and heavily fermented. Tianjian (天尖茶) is something entirely different.

Meaning "Heaven Tips," Tianjian is the highest grade of Anhua's traditional Sanjian (Three Tips) teas. For centuries, it has been prized for its finer leaf material and elegant character—even being presented as a tribute tea during the Qing Dynasty. Unlike many Anhua dark teas that are compressed into bricks, Tianjian has traditionally remained a loose-leaf tea, allowing it to breathe, age naturally, and showcase the quality of the leaves themselves.

This tea comes from the mountains of Anhua County, Hunan, one of China's most famous dark tea regions. The tea garden is less of a garden and more of a truly wild mountain environment, surrounded by native forests, bamboo, wild shrubs, and a thriving natural ecosystem. Rather than relying on pesticides or fertilizers, the garden is maintained almost entirely by hand, with weeds removed manually while the surrounding vegetation naturally enriches the soil. It's a farm that goes beyond simply being organic—it's a biodiverse mountain ecosystem where the tea grows in harmony with nature.

That environment gives this Tianjian a remarkably clean and expressive character. This tea brews into a beautiful pale golden-yellow cup that's bright, aromatic, and full of life.

The tea first offers aromas of sweet red bean and a barley-like woodiness. In the cup, you'll find sweet notes of grape leaf and sugarcane, and a gentle nuttiness reminiscent of toasted grains carried by a refreshing mountain wildness that leaves the mouth and throat feeling clean, airy, and energized. The finish is naturally sweet, while the medium-bodied tea remains soft, smooth, and easy to drink.

Because Tianjian uses finer leaf material, it extracts flavor quickly and evolves beautifully throughout a tea session. Rather than boiling it like many dark teas, we recommend brewing it gongfu style to appreciate its layered aromatics and changing character. Expect 10–15 satisfying infusions, with each steep revealing something new.

Gongfu Brewing

  • Teaware: 90ml gaiwan
