The Jianzhan teapots originated in the Jianyang District of Nanping City, Northern Fujian Province. Its popularity peaked sometime around the Song dynasty in China, then waned in the Ming dynasty. Fortunately, the tradition was carried on in Japan and Korea for many years after.
Although Jianzhan glazes are all basically the same, due to different firing temperatures and positioning within the kiln, each cup's fired glazing pattern becomes totally unique from any other.
These teacups are high in iron content. The insulative thickness helps retain the tea temperature without burning your hand.

I have a small collection of teapots that are very important to me. This new teapot is one of my favorites now. It is the perfect size and feels like sipping tea out of the Milky Way. I’d also like to give respect to the woman in the shop.
She was patient and encouraging as I picked up the various pots before I chose the perfect one. The selection at Tea and Whisk is so extensive, I feel lucky to have found this one.
