A compact, half-handmade Yixing Xi Shi (西施壶) teapot made from Qinghui Ni (青灰泥), a gray-toned clay in the Duanni (段泥) family. The classic Xi Shi shape has a rounded body and ball-shaped lid knob, while the compact 110 ml capacity makes it a comfortable choice for a quiet gongfu tea session. The charcoal-gray surface has a subtle natural grain, and the teapot has a built-in multi-hole filter at the spout.

Xi Shi Shape & Qinghui Clay

Xi Shi (西施壶, also spelled Xishi) is a traditional Yixing teapot shape known for its rounded, soft silhouette. Qinghui Ni (青灰泥) is part of the Duanni clay family. This piece was half handmade (半手工) in Yixing, China, and fired at approximately 1,200°C. The finish is unglazed, with stamped marks visible on the underside, handle, and inside the lid. These close-up details are shown in the product photos.

What Tea Works Well?

Our first recommendations for this little pot are sheng (raw) puerh and lightly roasted oolongs, including lighter Phoenix oolongs. White tea is another style worth exploring. Qinghui Duanni is often chosen for teas with a lighter liquor or a little astringency, although the result depends on the tea, water, and brewing technique. A 110 ml teapot is especially convenient for short, repeated gongfu infusions.

Unglazed Yixing clay can gradually hold traces of tea aroma, so we suggest dedicating the pot to one tea family rather than switching between strongly different teas.

A Note from Leo

I went to Yixing because I wanted to find teapots directly from the people making them, not just pick from catalog photos. I wanted to see the clay and hold the pots myself before deciding what to bring to Tea & Whisk.

Business was slower for many makers during my visit, which gave me a chance to find genuine Yixing teapots at prices I could pass along. I liked this little gray one for its simple shape and comfortable size for everyday gongfu tea.

Care & Natural Variation

Before first use, rinse thoroughly with hot water. After brewing, empty the leaves, rinse with warm water without scented soap, and let the pot and lid dry completely before storage.

Because this teapot is finished by hand, slight differences in clay texture, color, or stamped details may occur. The listing includes one teapot and lid only.
