Honey Orchid Oolong—蜜兰香 (Mìlánxiāng)— is one of the most celebrated fragrance types of Phoenix Dancong Oolong from Chaozhou, Guangdong, China. Despite its name, this tea contains no added honey or orchids. Its name describes its naturally occurring combination of orchid-like florals, golden honey sweetness, ripe fruit, and lingering fragrance.

But this is not just another Honey Orchid. This tea comes from a second-generation mother bush, carrying a direct genetic connection to the original mother bush from which its lineage began.

Why Second Generation Matters

The original mother bush is the source of the lineage. A plant propagated directly from it represents the second generation, while plants propagated from those descendants belong to subsequent generations.

母树 → 二代 → 三代

Over generations, Honey Orchid plants have spread throughout the Phoenix tea-growing region. Although propagation preserves a plant's genetic lineage, growing conditions and processing can produce very different expressions of the same tea variety.

The generation alone doesn't guarantee a superior cup. What makes this tea special is how beautifully it expresses the qualities we look for in exceptional Honey Orchid: floral fragrance, ripe fruit, honey sweetness, silky texture, and remarkable depth—all in one tea.

A Fragrance That Fills Your Entire Mouth

The aroma from this tea is unbelievably sweet, complex, and inviting.

Take the tiniest sip, and the aroma seems to fill your entire mouth and rise into your nose. Ripe white peach, sweet cream, and orchid unfold together, followed by a smooth, rich honey sweetness that coats the palate. Beneath it all is a whisper of cacao-like complexity, grounding the fragrance without ever becoming heavy. The texture is silky, smooth, and rich, carrying the aroma effortlessly across the palate. The tea is exceptionally layered, yet everything feels beautifully integrated.

Then comes the finish. The honey and orchid notes linger long after each sip, while every exhale seems to revive the sweet white peach aroma in your nose. Even after swallowing, the aroma continues to return, revealing new layers as you sit with the tea.

Letting the Tea Speak for Itself

The roast is exceptionally subtle, allowing the tea's natural character to shine. Too much roast can mask the delicate florals, ripe fruit, and honey sweetness that make exceptional Honey Orchid so captivating and add a dryness to the tea that ruins the texture. Here, every layer remains clear and expressive, with nothing overpowering the tea's natural complexity.

A Tea You Can Feel

Beyond its flavor, this tea has incredible enery you can feel. Even after just one or two cups, you may feel a gentle wave of euphoria, almost as though you've spent an hour in meditation, which many people refer to as "tea drunk". The quality and age of the tea bush gives this tea a higher concentration of L-theanine, which is responsible for this relaxing, floating sensation. The combination of this drunky feeling, silky texture, natural sweetness, and lingering fragrance invites you to slow down and settle into the moment.

How We Recommend Brewing It

This is one tea where smaller is better. In Chaozou, this is how they brew all of their dancong oolongs, in tiny 60ml teapots and 10 ml teacups, to get super concentrated and complex tea.

Chaozou Style

Use a small gaiwan or teapot no larger than 80ml, with 5g of leaves. The goal is to have the leaves fill the entire vessel.

  • 5g tea
  • 60-80ml gaiwan or teapot
  • 200°F / 93°C water
  • Quickly rinse the leaves
  • For every infusion, pour the water in and immediately pour it out—about 1 second

The leaves are incredibly aromatic, and even the rinse is fragrant enough to drink. The extremely short infusions allow you to pull out the tea's remarkable sweetness and aroma without overwhelming the delicate balance.

For the best experience, use a small, tall aroma cup with a narrow opening. It concentrates the fragrance toward your nose rather than allowing it to disperse into the air.

Take a sip, then pause, and let the fragrance build. Allow the oils coat your tongue, and wait for the sweetness to come back before going back for another sip.

Regular Gongfu Style for Maximum Sweetness

Use a small gaiwan or teapot between 90ml-100ml, with 4g of leaves.

  • 5g tea
  • 60-80ml gaiwan or teapot
  • 185-190°F / 85-87°C water
  • Quickly rinse the leaves
  • Steep for 15-17 seconds per infusion
  • Add 2-3 more second to each subsequent steep after the 6th infusion
