Most wood-fired gaiwans have a substantial feel in the hand. This handmade Jingdezhen gaiwan is different: its remarkably thin, light body and well-balanced shape make it comfortable to hold and pour, without losing the character of traditional wood firing.

Making a wood-fired gaiwan this thin is unusually demanding. According to our sourcing experience, at least half of these delicate pieces can break during production. That makes the combination of lightness, balance, and a successful firing especially difficult to achieve.

The surface moves between warm cream, amber, toasted brown, and dark ash markings. Its natural pattern emerged in the wood kiln and cannot be precisely repeated. The individual markings, fine glaze texture, and subtle irregularities give this particular gaiwan its own personality.

Best Teas for This Gaiwan

The open bowl gives larger, whole leaves plenty of room to expand. Its lightweight, balanced shape also makes it comfortable to pour. This piece is especially well suited to:

  • Raw puerh: Great for larger leaves that need space to open during brewing.
  • Young white tea: Especially Silver Needle and White Peony, with their long, delicate leaves.
  • Wuyi oolong: A beautiful match for rock oolong, helping bring out its mineral character.
  • Dancong oolong: Helps the tea feel smoother and rounder on the palate.
  • Yunnan black tea (red tea): Ideal for the larger leaves often found in Yunnan red teas.
  • Aged teas: A great choice for aged teas of many kinds, including aged puerh and aged white tea.

A Note from Leo

Jingdezhen Sourcing Trip, 2025

I found this gaiwan during my 2025 trip to Jingdezhen. I've handled many wood-fired gaiwans over the years. Most were beautiful but felt a little heavy or awkward when pouring. This one stood out right away. It's surprisingly thin and light, with the balance I had been looking for. Making a wood-fired piece like this is incredibly difficult, and that's what makes it so special to me.
