Arita-yaki is one of Japan’s most celebrated porcelain traditions, originating in Arita, Saga Prefecture over 400 years ago. One of its most recognizable styles is Sometsuke (染付), where cobalt blue decoration is painted beneath a clear glaze, creating the classic blue-and-white appearance associated with traditional Arita porcelain.
This collection shows a more playful side of Sometsuke. The Blue Blossom design features bold flowers and leaves flowing across the rounded porcelain body, with natural variations in the cobalt blue creating depth and movement.
The other designs appear simple from the outside, decorated with strong indigo blue and white bands, but reveal a hidden surprise inside. At the bottom of each cup is a whimsical gentleman painted in cobalt blue. As the tea is enjoyed, the illustration slowly appears, making the cup itself part of the tea experience.
This contrast between refined porcelain and playful illustration gives the collection a character that feels both traditional and relaxed. The decoration remains rooted in classic Sometsuke, while the hidden figures add warmth, humor, and personality.
With capacities of 100 to 120 ml, these cups are comfortable for everyday tea while still being well suited for smaller, more focused tea sessions.
