We’re excited to introduce something completely new from our latest 2025 tea trip to Japan: Aka Matcha, also known as Black Tea Matcha.

When most people think of matcha, they picture finely ground shaded Japanese green tea—and rightly so. That’s the tradition, and it’s what gives matcha its vivid color and intense umami flavor.

But instead of shaded green tea, they took a Japanese black tea and ground it really fine, just like you would a matcha. Same creamy whisked preparation—but with the bold, malty depth of a Japanese black tea. It’s rich, smooth, and deeply comforting.

Even better, this Aka Matcha comes from the same certified organic farm that produces our beloved Royal Matcha. That means you’re getting the same high-quality craftsmanship and commitment to clean farming, just with a completely different flavor experience.

You can prepare it the same way as traditional matcha — just use slightly less, since this powder is naturally quite bold.

Straight whisked:
Whisk 1–1.5g with 120–150ml water at 165°F (74°C) for a vivid, tea-forward cup.

Latte style (our favorite):
Whisk 1.5–2g with about 50ml hot water, then pour over 8–10oz steamed milk. Add a touch of brown sugar or honey only if you prefer sweetness — it’s flavorful enough on its own.

Comforting, cozy, and completely unexpected—this is matcha reimagined. Give it a try and taste a whole new side of Japanese tea.

Good for certain applications

It froths amazing. Easy to make. Good in lattes, not sure it would be great on its own. Taste is interesting, earthier and milder than a green matcha. Warning, the froth looks amazing, but don't sip the froth, it tastes grainy and bad.
