Chiran Organic Houjicha is a Japanese roasted green tea made by pan- or drum-roasting tea leaves at high heat. The result is a toasty, nutty, and smooth profile with much less caffeine than unroasted green teas.
This version from Chiran opens with the aroma of roasted almonds and cocoa powder. On the palate, it reveals layers of toasted mixed nuts, roasted grains, and a subtle malty sweetness reminiscent of dark honey. The tea has a warm, mellow depth with a hint of woodiness that balances the flavor and gives it structure.
Chiran (知覧町), located in southern Kyushu’s Kagoshima Prefecture, is known for its volcanic soil, ample sun, and mild climate—ideal conditions for tea farming. Local farmers have been cultivating certified organic tea here for over 20 years, with a strong focus on healthy soil and natural farming methods.
Most houjicha is made from later-season harvests, but this one is made from the rare first flush (spring harvest) leaves. Using these early-picked leaves gives the tea a cleaner, softer flavor with more nuance. The roasting is done carefully to bring out depth without overpowering the delicate qualities of the spring harvest.
Brewing Guide:
Use 5 grams of tea with 190°F (88°C) water in a 180–200 ml kyusu or hōhin. Steep for 30 seconds. Raise the water temperature slightly for later infusions, and enjoy the tea through 3–4 brews.
This hōjicha captures a balance of spring leaf freshness, clean organic cultivation, and comforting roasted depth. If you're drawn to a more malty, full-bodied expression of hōjicha, this tea is a great fit.
Notes: Toasted Almond, Dark Honey, Molasses, Roasted Grain, Dark Cocoa
