Grown deep inside the UNESCO-protected Jingmai Ancient Tea Forest, this Wengji Shou Puerh comes from one of the most ecologically preserved tea regions in Yunnan. Jingmai sits in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County and is known for one of the largest and oldest man-made tea forests in the world.

Wengji (翁基) is a tiny historic village tucked inside this landscape. Leo found this tea on his 2025 sourcing trip. The village feels almost Ghibli-like — narrow lanes that twist up hills, lined with teashops hidden in corners and stairways. He tasted more than 30 different teas there before selecting this one: a shou carefully aged since 2018. Interestingly, after letting it rest at the shop for a couple of months, the flavor opened up even more than he remembered, richer, more complex, and more luxurious in texture.

Because this shou has been aged, the caffeine content naturally decreases over time while free amino acids such as L-theanine (the compound responsible for the "zen", calming feeling) become more concentrated in the leaf. As a result, the liquor brews soft, smooth, and round — an easy tea to drink repeatedly throughout the day without harsh edges or an intense caffeine buzz. Combined with its warming properties, comforting, rich flavor, it naturally lends itself to fall and winter drinking.

Tasting Notes
Sweet custard, egg-tart like aroma with soft redwood pine-like woodiness in the background.
The tea is thick, smooth, and oily, coating the mouth and throat with a silky finish.
Flavors lean buttery and rich with subtle notes of coffee and a dark chocolate-mousse-like depth.
The finish leaves a lingering earthy sweetness reminiscent of red bean.

Brewing Guide (Gongfu Style)
Water: 204°F / 96°C
5g tea • 90ml gaiwan
Quick rinse
1st infusion: 15s steep time
2nd–5th: 2–3s steep time
After 5th: 2-3s longer per subsequent infusion
Expect up to 16-18 infusions

Result: A buttery, rich shou with redwood pine groundedness, chocolate-mousse depth, and an egg-tart sweetness.

Why we love it
This tea is extremely forgiving — no muskiness, no sharp edges.
Even if you accidentally over-steep, it still drinks smooth without any bitterness.
If you want a deeply satisfying cold-weather shou with a flavor profile unlike other cooked puerhs — this is an exceptional and very distinctive one to add to your collection.
