This Master Wang Charcoal-Roasted Tieguanyin Oolong brings together the boldness of traditional charcoal roasting with the purity of wild-grown leaves from the mountainous regions of Anxi, Fujian. Wild Charcoal-Roasted Tieguanyin is crafted using time-honored techniques that add richness, warmth, and depth to this already iconic tea.
The name "Tieguanyin" translates to "Iron Goddess," referring to both the tea's tightly rolled, iron-like leaves and its legendary link to the Bodhisattva Guanyin. As one of China’s top ten famous teas and a designated national intangible cultural heritage, Tieguanyin has earned its reputation for both cultural importance and complex flavor.
After the standard oolong tea-making process—plucking, withering, shaking, fixation, rolling, and drying—this version undergoes a final charcoal roast over slow-burning hardwoods like longan. This traditional roast deepens the tea’s profile without damaging the integrity of the leaf, offering a balanced and nuanced cup. Compared to the unroasted version, which is light, floral, and green, the charcoal-roasted style is more full-bodied and bold, with comforting roasted notes and natural sweetness.
Flavor and Texture
Right away, the aroma pulls you in with notes of candied pecans, gardenia flowers, and peony. The first sip is nutty and sweet—think candied pecans and cinnamon sugar—with a subtle fruity brightness like green apple. This whisper of cinnamon is not like chai, but more like catching the scent of a cinnamon nut stand from a distance.
The aftertaste is floral and aromatic, lingering gently in the back of the nose. The body is full and satisfying, though the texture is not necessarily thick. It’s slightly drier than our unroasted Tieguanyin, but not in a harsh or off-putting way—more like a crisp finish that rounds out the richness of the roast.
Brewing Instructions
This tea comes in convenient single-serving packets of about 8.5g—perfect for gongfu brewing.
-
Teaware: 90-100ml gaiwan
-
Water Temperature: 195°F (91°C)
-
Tea Amount: One 8.5g packet
-
Steeping: Rinse quickly, then steep for 15–17 seconds on the first brew. For later infusions, steep just 2–3 seconds. Since you’re using more leaf than usual, keep the steeping time short and with lower temperature water for best results.
The tea holds up well up to 14–15 infusions, allowing you to enjoy this tea over and over again. After the 6/7th brew, start adding 1–2 seconds to the steep time fore each additional brew. However, it is important to brew it properly without over-steeping, so it doesn't become overly bright.
This is a great choice if you’re looking for a tea that’s floral and sweet but with a more robust, roasted character. It’s perfect as a dessert tea—great with pastries, after a meal, or even as a comforting alternative to dessert. If you enjoy darker roasted oolongs or are a coffee drinker curious about tea, this one’s for you. A strong, satisfying, and unique tea to keep in your oolong rotation.
