Guilin, China, which translates to "Osmanthus Forest," is a city where every street is lined with these fragrant trees. While osmanthus tea is popular in Chinese tea, desserts, and cooking, it wasn't until our recent visit to Guilin that we experienced the true depth of its allure. There, we encountered the Jinqui (金球桂) cultivar—known as "Golden Ball"—a high-quality, single-cultivar osmanthus that redefined our understanding of this flower.

Unlike the typical osmanthus teas available in stores, which can sometimes be bitter or overly floral, we sourced the highest quality available only directly from the producers which offers a sweet, fresh aroma without any bitterness. Its delicate fragrance and flavor profile are unparalleled.

One of the most surprising revelations was discovering how osmanthus is used—not as a standalone tea, but as a seasoning to enhance other teas. Much like how we use salt in cooking to elevate flavors, a small sprinkle of osmanthus can add subtle sweetness, complexity, and floral notes to any tea without overpowering its base flavor. This approach aligns perfectly with traditional tea practices, where the goal is to highlight and harmonize flavors rather than mask them.

These flowers grow on trees and are never treated with herbicides or pesticides, ensuring they are organic and chemical-free. Suggested Brewing Guidelines:

When brewing by itself:

  • Use one pinch (roughly 35-40 petals) of flowers

  • (be careful not to use too much).

  • Heat water to 195°F (90°C).

  • Steep for 30–45 seconds, or until the water slightly changes color.

  • Since the flowers are small, use a fine strainer or a teapot with fine strainers to brew.

To brew with other teas:

  • Add half a pinch of osmanthus (roughly 15-20 petals) into the tea leaves.

  • Brew the tea as you usually would for that particular tea.
