Rougui (肉桂) Wuyi Oolong is one of the most famous Wuyi rock oolongs (岩茶) from Wuyishan, Fujian Province. It’s a semi-oxidized oolong, traditionally known as one of the “Four Famous Bushes” (四大名叢) of Wuyi rock tea, alongside Da Hong Pao, Shuixian, and Tie Luo Han.

The name Rougui means “Cinnamon,” not because it contains any, but for its natural cinnamon-like aroma and gentle spicy sweetness. The cultivar is believed to have originated in Zhengyan, the core growing area of Wuyishan, and has been cultivated since the late Qing Dynasty.

This tea opens with soft spice aromas—cinnamon, pink peppercorn, and sweet orchid and gardenia florals in the background. The first sip brings a white peach-like sweetness, followed by floral tones of peach blossom and orchid, wrapped in warm roasted notes, buttery spices, and a subtle stone-like minerality.

The aftertaste lingers long after each sip, inviting you to pause and savor the sweet fruit, spice, and gentle warmth that unfold in the mouth and chest. With its good body and rich, balanced profile, this Rougui expresses both sweet and floral notes in a way that lets the spice, roast, and minerality shine through for a complex and nuanced experience.

The roasting and processing of this tea lowers the caffeine as well and leaves a higher concentration of L-theanine, making the tea release the caffeine is a slow gentle way that feels euphoric and drunky rather than jittery and alert.

How to Brew (Gongfu Style):

  • Use a 90ml gaiwan

  • Add 5g of tea leaves

  • Quick rinse with 202°F (94°C) water

  • First infusion: 15 seconds

  • Following infusions: 5 seconds each

  • After the 6th brew, add 2–3 seconds each time

Brewing with hotter water and shorter steeps will highlight Rougui’s signature spice.
For a sweeter, silkier cup, use 195°F (91°C) water and slightly longer steeps.

This Master Wang Rougui is a refined and fruit-forward expression of the classic Rougui—perfect for Wuyi oolong lovers who want to explore a softer, more aromatic expression, or for anyone who appreciates complex, elegant teas that leave you feeling calm and deeply relaxed.
