Updated May 29, 2025:
It’s finally back — and better than ever.
Our beloved Asanoka Fukamushi Sencha has returned, and this year’s batch is truly something special. If you’ve followed Leo’s tea journey, you know this has always been his favorite sencha — and for good reason. Smooth, vibrant, and full of life, it’s also become a cult favorite among our regulars.
But this isn’t just a restock — it’s a discovery.
On his 2025 Japan Tea Trip, Leo visited countless tea farms in search of something exceptional. And he found it: a new producer crafting Asanoka sencha exactly the way he likes it. This particular batch might just be the best he’s ever sourced — a bold claim, but one taste will tell you why.
The Asanoka cultivar itself is becoming increasingly rare. A unique cross between Yabukita and Chinese Hiramizu #1, Asanoka is known for its fragrant aroma, gentle sweetness, and low astringency — qualities that make it remarkably easy to enjoy, even for new tea drinkers. Yet few farms grow it today, and even fewer process it as a deep-steamed (fukamushi) sencha.
Out of all the farms Leo visited, only two were making Asanoka the way he loves: with a deep steam that creates an intense green liquor, rich body, and a silky, satisfying mouthfeel — without the risk of bitterness. The result is a tea that’s effortless to brew yet full of nuance:
-
A fresh, grassy aroma that lifts as soon as you open the bag
-
A clean, soft texture that feels almost creamy
-
A lingering aftertaste that refreshes like a breeze through spring leaves
This tea is everything we love about Japanese green tea — approachable, refined, and soul-soothing. If you're looking for a sencha that feels like a daily luxury, this is it.
The tea leaves are picked in the second week of April in Kagoshima, Japan. They're super soft and tender. And get this: they're shaded for five days before harvest, just like our other Kagoshima green tea.
Now, let's talk aroma. Imagine the scent of a fresh, juicy steamed cabbage. Mmm! On the first infusion, you'll catch a hint of sweet almond, followed by a delightful earthy veggie flavor, kinda like lettuce. But here's the real kicker—the aftertaste is absolutely amazing. It sticks around for quite a while and leaves you with a sweet and refreshing cucumber sensation. It's like a party in your mouth!
If you drink Japanese green tea every day, we highly recommend using Japanese teapot (kyusu) to make your green tea. It will brew your green tea better. It's much easier and, most importantly, much better tasting!
