Uji is always renowned as THE place for matcha. But finding an organic matcha that is 100% handpicked is rare, it's so rare that most will give you a look when you ask if they have handpicked organic matcha.

Saemidori (さえみどり) is a Japanese tea cultivar known for its vibrant green color and a balanced, umami-rich flavor profile. It was developed in the early 1960s in Shizuoka Prefecture, a renowned tea-producing region.

Saemidori is a crossbreed between the Yabukita and Asatsuyu cultivars, aiming to combine the desirable qualities of both parent plants. The result is a cultivar that tends to have a bright green leaf color, a smooth and mellow taste, and a good resistance to diseases.

This cultivar gained popularity for its ability to produce high-quality sencha (steeped green tea) with a pleasant balance of sweetness and umami. Its cultivation has expanded beyond Shizuoka, and Saemidori tea is now produced in various tea-growing regions in Japan.

Saemidori is a notable tea cultivar in Japan, appreciated for its excellent flavor characteristics and adaptability to different growing conditions.

The only other alternative is to go to Japan yourself

While this matcha may seem expensive, it’s much more affordable than flying to Japan, getting matcha, and flying back. It’s also much more convenient! To be honest, this is the only stateside matcha I’m willing to drink. No regrets at all!
