This 2009 Aged Iron Monk Oolong, or Tie Luo Han (铁罗汉), is one of the famous Four Great Bushes (四大名丛) of Wuyi rock teas. It originates from Huiyuan Rock in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province, a region known for producing some of the finest oolong teas. This tea stands out for its history and its distinct, well-balanced flavor.
This Tie Luo Han is a roasted, semi-fermented oolong. The leaves are dark green with a slight reddish tint, and when brewed, they produce a bright orange-yellow tea. The flavor is rich and robust, with notes of roasted walnuts and sweet persimmon, balanced by a subtle mineral undertone typical of Wuyi teas. The first infusion leans more earthy, while from the second infusion, the sweeter, fruity notes come forward. You might also notice a hint of savory spice, similar to Chinese cinnamon. The tea has a silky mouthfeel with no dryness— something rare in aged Wuyi oolongs—offering a good body and a lingering sweet, woody aftertaste. Because of its satisfying and rich body and flavor, this tea can stand on its own or can be a great pairing even with a hearty meal.
The Wuyi Mountains provide the perfect environment for cultivating teas like Tie Luo Han. The mineral-rich soil, frequent mist, and rocky terrain allow the tea plants to absorb nutrients from their surroundings, giving the tea its signature “rock charm”.
Brewing Instructions:
We recommend brewing this tea Gongfu style. Use 5 grams of tea in a 90-120ml gaiwan or teapot. Heat water to 205°F (96°C) and give the leaves a quick rinse— use this rinse to warm your cups. For the first infusion, steep for 10-15 seconds. For the following infusions, steep for just 2-3 seconds. As you continue brewing, you’ll notice the flavors shift, revealing different layers with each infusion. Enjoy up to 16-18 infusions, making it a perfect tea to sip during a relaxed meal or to share with friends over a leisurely tea session.
If you‘re looking for a well-balanced Wuyi oolong with rich, layered flavors and a smooth, silky finish, this 2009 Aged Iron Monk Oolong is a perfect choice. Its complexity and ability to evolve with each infusion make it a great tea to enjoy slowly, whether on your own or with friends.
