After speaking with several locals, he kept hearing about Pingjiang, a hidden tea town where smoky tea has been part of daily life for generations.

At first, Leo was hesitant. Smoky teas can sometimes feel too intense, dry, or one-dimensional, with the smoke covering the natural flavor of the leaves. But this Pingjiang Yancha surprised him. The smoke is gentle and smooth, adding warmth and depth without overwhelming the tea.

This tea comes from one of the highest-elevation organic farms in the Pingjiang area. The garden is surrounded by wild plants and natural vegetation, allowing the tea to grow in a more self-sustaining environment with very little human interference. The result is a tea that feels clean, wild, and deeply comforting.

One unique detail is the use of local “tea pepper,” a wild pepper that reminds Leo slightly of Sichuan peppercorn. A small amount is added during the smoking process, giving the tea a subtle cooling, lightly spicy, and gently numbing sensation. It is very soft in the background, adding complexity without making the tea feel spicy.

The liquor is smooth, warming, and incredibly forgiving. You can steep it many times throughout the day without it becoming bitter. It works beautifully in a gaiwan, but it is also perfect for tumbler brewing. In Pingjiang, locals often drink the same leaves all day and even eat the softened leaves afterward, either plain or with rice.

This tea is also wonderful for cooking. Use the brewed tea or spent leaves with meat to add a delicate, naturally smoked aroma.

Tasting Notes: gentle wood smoke, warm grain, soft spice, subtle cooling pepper, mineral sweetness, smooth body

Brewing Guide:
Use about 4g in a 90–100ml gaiwan. Rinse briefly, then brew with 195°F water for 15–20 seconds. Increase steeping time gradually. You can also steep it casually in a tumbler and refill throughout the day.

A rare smoked yellow tea from Pingjiang, Hunan—smooth, warming, easy to brew, and deeply connected to local daily tea culture.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0268/9486/0322/files/smoked-pingjiang-yancha-yellow-tea-4735404.jpg?v=1780386250
