You may find Yixing clay teapots from Jiangsu, Chaozhou clay pots from Guangdong, Nixing pottery from Qinzhou in Guangxi, Jianshui clay teapots from Yunnan, porcelain and ceramic pieces from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi, Taiwanese teapots, Japanese kyusu, and other brewing vessels we discover along the way.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEach region has its own materials, techniques, and personality. Yixing is famous for its unglazed clay and long teapot-making tradition. Chaozhou pots are often smaller and work beautifully with concentrated gongfu brewing. Nixing pottery has a completely different character, using local Qinzhou clay and traditional firing methods. Jianshui is known for dense, polished clay and distinctive craftsmanship. Jingdezhen has centuries of porcelain history and gives us everything from simple everyday brewing pieces to more detailed hand-painted work.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSome of our teapots are completely handmade by individual artists. Some are partially handmade or produced in small workshops. Compared with porcelain, an unglazed pot may soften some sharper edges and emphasize \u003cstrong\u003ebody, texture, and roundness\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause the interior is unglazed, I would also avoid constantly switching between strongly different tea categories. Over time, the pot can gradually take on traces of the teas brewed inside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor this particular pot, I especially like \u003cstrong\u003esheng puerh and Chinese green tea\u003c\/strong\u003e, particularly teas where you want to soften a little sharpness while maintaining their fresh character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhy Taiwanese Pottery?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTaiwanese teaware does not revolve around one famous clay deposit in the same way that Yixing does. Taiwanese studio potters work with \u003cstrong\u003edifferent local and formulated clay bodies\u003c\/strong\u003e, experimenting with mineral composition, firing temperature, kiln atmosphere, and surface treatment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis has helped create a pottery culture where the individual maker and firing method can be just as important as the name of the clay itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTaiwan's modern tea culture also brings together influences from \u003cstrong\u003etraditional Chinese gongfu brewing and Japanese ceramic aesthetics\u003c\/strong\u003e, resulting in pots that tend to balance practical brewing with more natural, understated surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhy Wood-Fired?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a wood kiln, the teapot is exposed to \u003cstrong\u003eflame, ash, heat, and constantly changing kiln conditions\u003c\/strong\u003e over the course of the firing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWood ash travels through the kiln and lands on the clay, while differences in flame direction, oxygen, temperature, and mineral content create natural variations across the surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is responsible for much of the pot's \u003cstrong\u003eburnished brown, charcoal, bronze, and purplish coloration\u003c\/strong\u003e. These are not simply colors chosen from a glaze chart—the firing leaves its own marks on the clay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause the pot is unglazed, those effects feel especially direct.
